Itinerary

Hike from Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts and back.

You can either begin and end your trip in Arusha (about a 2-hour drive each way) or spend the night before in Moshi.

Your mountain guide will meet you (usually at your hotel) for a briefing before heading to Kilimanjaro National Park’s eastern entrance, Marangu Gate, at an elevation of 1,860 m / 6,046 ft. After your guide completes the permit paperwork, you’ll embark on an adventure through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest.

Along the way, enjoy the vibrant vegetation and keep an eye out for Blue Monkeys, the striking black-and-white Colobus Monkeys, and a wide variety of birds.

The climb to Mandara Huts takes about 3-4 hours. Upon arrival at Mandara Huts (2,700 m / 8,860 ft), you’ll have a packed lunch and a well-deserved break. Time permitting, you may also extend the hike to Maundi Crater, where you can take in stunning views of Kilimanjaro, Northern Tanzania, and Kenya (weather allowing). After lunch, you’ll descend back to Marangu Gate and return to your accommodation. The descent from Mandara Huts takes approximately 2-3 hours.
