Empakaai Crater Hike

Empakaai Crater Hike

In the Highlands region of the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area (NCA), there are excellent opportunities to break up a vehicle safari and enjoy some time on foot. The beautiful but lesser-known Empakaai Crater is located about 40 km northeast of the famous Ngorongoro Crater.

Upon arrival at Empakaai, you’ll be greeted with spectacular views of the crater and a distant glimpse of Oldoinyo Lengai, Tanzania’s most active volcano. With an experienced guide and an NCA ranger, you’ll begin a 30–45 minute descent into the crater, winding through lush, mountainous forest. Once on the crater floor, you’ll find fantastic birdwatching near the lake, with chances to spot flamingos and even some larger wildlife, including buffalo, hyena, and elephant.

A moderate level of fitness is recommended, and sturdy shoes are essential.
